A Bit About Us
We the Harari people (Harari: ጌይኡሱኣች Gēyusuach, "People of the City") are an ethnic group of people living in the Horn of Africa. We traditionally reside in the walled city of Harar, called Gēy "the City"; situated in the Harari Region of eastern Ethiopia. We speak the Harari language and have a very rich culture that we are proud of.
The first Harari migrants began arriving in Melbourne, Victoria in the early 1980s. HCAA Inc. was founded by the first 17 Harari’s to arrive in Australia with the mission of teaching and passing the Harari culture to the new generation to be born in Australia. The organisation was officially registered as an association in 1990; making it the longest-standing Harari community organisation in the whole of Australia. Today, HCAA Inc. has almost 300 members and growing. In recent years, the organisation needed to shift its focus to cater for the needs of the aging Harari’s while maintaining its mission of educating the large number of diverse Harari youth.

Our mission at Harari Community Association Australia Inc. (HCCA Inc.) is to ensure every member, young and old, feels a strong sense of belonging and connection within the community. We are committed to supporting our members through life's ups and downs, celebrating their joys, and standing by them during difficult times.
We provide an array of cultural resources to enhance members' experiences and cater to various occasions. Our goal is to empower the community to embrace their heritage while integrating seamlessly into the broader Australian society.
Our vision is a united and vibrant Harari community that thrives on mutual support, cultural richness, and active engagement with the wider world. We aim for a future where every member finds a place of belonging within our organization and contributes positively to society.
OUR GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
We at Harari Community Association Australia Inc. (HCCA Inc.) are deeply committed to upholding and promoting the cherished cultural and religious standards within our Harari community. To ensure our programs and initiatives resonate with the community, we actively involve previous senior members and respected elders in shaping our ongoing endeavors.
Our primary objective is to engage and connect with our community members on a regular basis. Through a variety of events and workshops held throughout the year, we seek to create opportunities for meaningful interactions and shared cultural experiences. By fostering unity and understanding, we strive to enhance the fabric of our community.
In our pursuit of holistic community development, we recognize the importance of supporting our local businesses. By establishing sponsorship agreements with Harari businesses in the area, we aim to boost their visibility and prosperity. This collaboration not only promotes economic growth but also ensures that our organization has the necessary resources to operate effectively.
In essence, our collective efforts are directed towards building a strong, united, and culturally enriched Harari community in Australia, embodying the principles and values that define us.
